90% of People with Melasma are Women

Statistics from the American Academy of Dermatology show that only 10% of melasma patients are male – 90% being female.

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition whose main symptom is hyperpigmentation – brown patches of skin – predominantly on the face.

The condition especially affects those areas where sun-exposure is at its greatest i.e. cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip.  The discolouration tends to be symmetrical (both sides of the face) but with a somewhat irregular shape.

Melasma in Skin of Colour

Melasma is very common, particularly for patients with skin of colour. Those with Asian, African, Middle East or Latin American skin types or mixed parentage skin are likely to be more at risk of developing the condition than White Caucasian patients. What’s more, the discolouration tends to be more obvious and visible on skin of colour, as the pigmented areas go darker and are even harder to conceal with makeup.

Mostly Women?

Melasma tends to affect women more than men, with statistics suggesting that 90% of sufferers are female.

However, it important to remember that while it is less common in male patients, it can negatively affect their quality of life just as much as women. Both genders can find the condition embarrassing. Yet for most men, the option to hide patchy discolouration with makeup is less of an option.

Treating Melasma

The first and most important piece of advice is to avoid the sun or use high SPF sunscreen. This reduces the sunlight triggering further melasma and over time, the discolouration should reduce, although probably not disappear.

There are a range of DIY solutions and products, but it’s important to be cautious here. Some products sold on the internet or in less reputable shops can be quite dangerous, causing white patches, inflammation or even scarring.

Professional treatments from a knowledgeable doctor specialising in hyperpigmentation are the best option to consider.
