Why is Melasma So Hard to Treat?

Melasma is a skin pigmentation which many women and men with skin of colour experience.

acne skin of colourThe problem is characterised by pigmented patches of skin on the areas most exposed to the sun. This pigmentation tends to be browny/grey in colour with an irregular pattern which is not pleasing. The condition is caused by increased melanin in the skin, which reacts to UV light.

Melasma is often difficult to treat and even where treatment does show some benefit, patients can find that the skin relapses and returns to its normal patchy condition after treatment is discontinued, which can be frustrating, disheartening and expensive.

The problem is that even when the patchy hyperpigmentation has been evened out, the patient may still have high levels of melanin in the skin, which make it prone to overreacting to sun exposure. This means that it is not really possible to ‘cure’ melasma. Doctors talk in terms of management, because maintenance is just as important as the actual treatment.

Melasma Treatment

The starting point is to reduce the amount of pigment in the skin. There are a number of treatments that doctors can use to accelerate skin cell turnover and thereby expel the outer layers of skin with excess pigmentation.

  • Chemical peels exfoliate the outer skin cells while stimulating cell renewal
  • Microdermabrasion is a mechanical treatment which achieves a similar objective
  • Dermamelan is a professional system designed specifically to treat melasma through a combination of approaches
  • Cosmeceutical skin care is now available which can achieve great results over time. These products require a prescription due to the medicinal nature of the ingredients. As a fully qualified doctor, Dr Barbara Kubicka is able to diagnose and prescribe suitable regimes from a carefully chosen range

Melasma Maintenance

  • Daily use of broad spectrum, high SPF UVA and UVB sunscreen is essential
  • This is to protect the skin from sun exposure and prevent further stimulation of pigment production
  • Going forward, this is the single most important measure in managing melasma
  • In order to maintain healthy skin, the right daily skincare can make an enormous difference. By substituting regular high street brands for cosmeceutical prescription-only products with active ingredients, patients can take advantage of high-tech solutions for promoting a more even skin tone in the long term
